FAQ

Questions about plans and billing

How does billing work?

Free, Trial and approved open-source sites need no card. Starter, Business and Enterprise are monthly subscriptions paid through Stripe Checkout; your administrator token opens the Stripe billing portal, where you can update your card, download invoices or cancel.

How long does setup take?

Your site is created as soon as you confirm your email or payment completes, usually within a few minutes. We email its address and a one-time link to your administrator token when it is ready.

Who owns the content?

You do. Your docs stay in your own GitHub repository as DITA source, and OpenD is MIT licensed, so you can move to self-hosting at any time without converting anything.

What happens if a payment fails?

Your instance keeps running for 7 days while you settle the payment. After that it is suspended, and your data is kept.

What is the difference between shared and dedicated hosting?

Shared plans run your site on our shared OpenD service: your content, readers and settings live in a database schema and storage of their own, and no other site can see them. Business and Enterprise get an isolated instance with a dedicated database and storage, and your own domain. Upgrading moves your site across.

What happens when the trial ends?

After a month the site moves to the Free plan and keeps running. Choose a paid plan any time to keep Starter features.

Which plan do I need for SSO or in-app help?

The web editor and the in-app help panel come with Starter and up. Reader sign-in through your own OpenID Connect provider comes with Business and Enterprise.

Can I try it first?

Read our own docs: they are a DITA project published with OpenD, so they show what your site will look like. Or install the OpenD CLI and preview your own DITA locally as any reader: it is free and open source. See the repository.

Can I host it myself instead?

Yes. OpenD is open source under the MIT license and runs with Docker Compose or on Railway. See self-hosting.

Do you have a security questionnaire or DPA?

Read how OpenD protects your content on the security page, and ask us for anything your procurement process needs.
